| 2. Secondary education: |
| Secondary education is divided into two years'
lower secondary and three years' upper secondary
school. The three-year secondary schools are of
two types: general and Sanskrit. At the end of the
general secondary level, students sit for the School
Leaving Certificate and the Sanskrit secondary level
students sit for the Uttar Madhyama Certificate
Examination. Higher secondary level education has
four streams: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science,
Commerce, and Education. At the end of these studies,
students sit for the Higher Secondary Certificate.
The same level of education is also being provided
by Tribhuvan University (all four streams), Kathmandu
University (Science stream) and Mahendra Sanskrit
University (a separate Sanskrit stream). Students
enrolled in Tribhuvan University sit for the Proficiency
Certificate, those enrolled in Kathmandu University
sit for the intermediate examinations and those
enrolled in Mahendra Sanskrit University sit for
the Uttar Madhyama examinations. Tribhuvan University
has initiated the process of phasing out this level
to higher secondary education.The vocational stream,
which lasts between one and two-and-a-half years,
leads to the Vocational School Leaving Certificate. |

| 3. Higher education: |
| Higher education is mainly provided by Tribhuvan
University, Mahendra Sanskrit University, Kathmandu
University and Purbanchal University and B.P. Korala
Institute of Health Science. There are five institutes
at Tribhuvan University (Medicine, Engineering,
Science, Agriculture and Forestry), four research
centres, four faculties (Humanities and Social Science,
Management, Law, and Education), as well as 61 constituent
and 140 affiliated campuses. The authorities responsible
for policy formulation at national level are the
Ministry of education and the National Planning
Commission. The budget allocated for development
is disbursed to the universities by the Ministry
of Education and the budget for the operation of
the universities of the public sector is allocated
through the University Grants Commission. Each university
has a University Council, an Academic Council, an
Executive Council and a University Service Commission.
Universities are autonomous. |

Non-university level:
Higher technical studies are offered in the
technical institutes of Tribhuvan University.
Technician Certificates are awarded following
two years' study after the School Leaving
Certificate in Forestry, Animal Husbandry
and Agriculture. Three-year Diploma courses
are offered in Engineering and three-year
Technician Certificate courses are offered
in Nursing and Ayurveda and one-and-a-half
(beyond Proficiency Certificate/Higher Secondary
level in Science) courses in para-medical
areas. The pre-higher education level technical
and vocational education programmes at Tribhuvan
University are to be phased out from the University
to institutions under the Council for Technical
Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).
University has already phased out one-year
and two-year courses in para-medical areas
to institutions under CTEVT. The schedule
for phasing out the remaining courses has
not been finalized.

University level
first stage: Bachelor's Degree:
Courses leading to the Bachelor's Degree last
between three and five-and-a-half years. Bachelor's
degrees in Sanskrit studies last for three
years. In subjects such as Agriculture and
Engineering studies last for four years and
in Medicine and Surgery and Veterinary Science
and Animal Husbandry they last for five-and-a-half
years.
University level second stage: Master's Degree,
Postgraduate Diploma:
The Master's Degree may be taken after a further
two to three years' study. Studies last for
two years in such fields as Engineering, Humanities
and Social Sciences, Sanskrit Studies and
Public Health. In Surgery, studies last for
three years. Postgraduate Diplomas lasting
between one and two years are also awarded.
A Master of Philosophy is conferred after
one-and-a-half years in Physics, Chemistry
and Mathematics.
University level third stage: Doctor of Philosophy:
A Doctor of Philosophy degree may be taken
after a further three years' study after the
Master's degree. |
| Teacher

Training of primary/basic
school teachers
Higher secondary schools offer a two-year
higher secondary programme in Education. This
is the formal programme for the training of
primary school teachers. The Ministry of Education
also organizes primary teacher training programmes.
Some programmes are conducted by the Faculty
of Education on behalf of the Ministry. There
is also a radio education teacher training
programme. The minimum qualification required
for these programmes is a School Leaving Certificate.
Training of secondary school teachers
The Faculty of Education, Tribhuvan University,
conducts a two-year Certificate level programme
in Education to train lower secondary school
teachers. The minimum admission requirement
is the School Leaving Certificate. It also
offer three-year and one-year B.Ed programmes
to train secondary level teachers. The minimum
admission requirement for the former programme
is the Proficiency Certificate or the Higher
Secondary Education Certificate and for
the latter it is the Bachelor's degree of
another faculty and institute. The Ministry
of Education runs non-formal secondary teacher
training programmes to train Science, Mathematics
and English teachers. The Faculty of Education
of Tribhuvan University conducts two-year
Med and one-year Postgraduate Diploma courses
to train higher secondary level teachers.

Distance higher
education
There is no organized distance higher education.
A system of private examinations exist at
the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences,
Management and Law at Tribhuvan University
and at Mahendra Sanskrit University whereby
candidates who have not attended university
can sit for the examinations.
Other forms of non-formal higher education
Non-formal studies include technical training
provided by ministries and government departments
in fields such as Telecommunications, Civil
Aviation, Surveying and Tourism and Hotel
Management. There are also training centres
for personnel in government and public companies.

of universities in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Sri Lanka is on a reciprocal basis. The
universities recognize the Certificates, Diplomas
and Degrees of foreign universities for the

on a unilateral basis also. Tribhuvan is the
